Program Details:
In cooperation with Montgomery County and the Montgomery County Green Initiative, the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency is sponsoring a lawnmower exchange program for area residents. The program invites residents to drop off gasoline-powered lawnmowers and receive a $150 coupon toward the purchase of a brand-new Neuton® Battery-Powered Cordless Electric Lawnmower CE5.2. This quiet, clean cordless electric mower is suitable for smaller yards up to 1/4 acre.
Gasoline mowers are to be brought in to the Montgomery County South Transfer Station
(1001 Encrete Lane in Moraine) on Saturday April 12th, between the hours of 8 AM and 2 PM. Mowers must be emptied of oil and gasoline prior to drop off. Residents may also drop off the waste gasoline and waste oil at the South Transfer Station (gasoline in approved containers only).
Neuton® Power Equipment is offering a special price of $289 on their mower to area residents. After ordering the mower from Neuton® Power Equipment and redeeming the coupon, residents’ cost will be only $139 (regular retail price $389). Area residents that don’t receive a $150 coupon may still request a coupon to purchase the Neuton® cordless electric mower at the special price of $289 until August 31, 2008. Shipping charges are included with the purchase price.
The program is paid for by supplemental environmental project funds, not taxpayer dollars.
There are significant environmental and health benefits to the electric mower:
- Accidental gasoline spills are eliminated!
- Noise is greatly reduced!
- Emissions of smog-creating hydrocarbons are eliminated!
According to EPA, the average walk-behind gasoline-powered lawnmower pollutes 11 times as much per hour as a car or truck.
“This is a great opportunity for area residents to improve our environment and reduce their exposure to noise and pollution,” says Jim Gross, Health Commissioner at Public Health – Dayton and Montgomery County. “We encourage residents to register for the lawnmower exchange and get a clean cordless electric mower.”
RAPCA Administrator John Paul says, "Exchanging gasoline mowers for electric mowers is a good way to improve air quality. Personally, I have had an electric mower for several years and would recommend it to anyone."
“Reducing emissions and improving the quality of life in our community are top priorities for the Montgomery County Commission,” said Commissioner Judy Dodge. “We are very pleased to partner with Public Health and RAPCA with this project to help people make an impact on our local environment.”
